The e-Stewards Certification Program

The e-Stewards Standard for Responsible Recycling and Reuse of Electronic Equipment® (“complete standard”) is the result of long collaboration between the environmental community and leaders in the recycling, auditing, occupational health, data security, and manufacturing industries as well as from the accredited third party certification industry. It is the standard that will be applied in the e-Stewards third party audited, accredited certification for electronics recyclers.

The e-Stewards Standard:

Two documents are available:

  1. The complete e-Stewards Standard for Responsible Recycling and Reuse of Electronic Equipment (which contains the entire ISO 14001 standard) serves as the basis for e-Stewards certifications. Our use of ISO proprietary language and our licensing of it from ANSI requires a purchase price. To purchase, send a check for $125 dollars payable to The Basel Action Network, 122 South Jackson Street, Suite 320, Seattle, WA, 98104, along with an email address and we will send you a digital copy (PDF) of the Standard, unless you request a hard copy instead.

If the copy of the Standard needs to be shipped to a location in Washington State, please notify us by email before you send a payment.

The Standard is also available for online purchase, through PayPal®.

I've read and agree to the End User License Agreement.

  2. An excerpted version of the Standard, which contains all the industry-specific e-Stewards performance requirements, but only summarizes the ISO requirements is also available. This version may not be used for the purposes of certification. The purpose of this excerpted document is to provide access to information about the specific e-Stewards requirements that are built into the ISO requirements for an environmental management system. This version is available at no cost and can be freely distributed. Click here to download.

Costs:

There are two costs associated with e-Steward Certification: First is the costs of the annual audit itself. It is an ISO-14001 based audit. Please contact the certifying bodies now going through accreditation for cost estimates. After this audit is completed and should a company pass, the company then signs a marketing and licensing agreement governing use of the e-Steward name, logo, and marketing materials and pays an annual marketing and licensing fee based on its annual gross revenue.

The e-Stewards program is a not-for-profit enterprise. 100% of licensing fees are spent on program support activities:

  1. Marketing of the e-Steward program
  2. Recruitment of e-Steward Enterprises, companies that commit to using e-Stewards whenever possible
  3. Program costs such as staff, rent, equipment
  4. Research & investigations
  5. Media work, legal fees
  6. Films, reports, brochures, websites
